Next up in our Cold Brew Connoisseur coffee reviews is Califia Mocha Cold Brew Coffee. Be sure to check out our review of STōK Cold Brew Protein as well. It's the first in the series. I guess I'm now on a mission to taste and review every ready-to-drink cold brew (only the creamed / flavored ones for now) out there.
On a whim, I saw Califia Mocha in the cooler when I was going back to stock up on more cold brew. Rather than purchasing the same kind, I decided to keep this thing going and picked up a Califia. Retail price at the supermarket I was at was $4.99, but it was also on sale for 2 for $7, so that may have been an incentive to this review as well!
This won't be a comparison review of the two cold brews I've tried so far. I want each of the reviews to stand on their own for now. So let's get started.
an expert judge in matters of taste.
What is Califia Mocha Cold Brew coffee?
Yeah, it's coffee. I get it. But what else?
Califia Mocha Cold Brew is my latest cold brew coffee experiment. Califia Mocha marries a few of my favorite things in the world - coffee and chocolate and brings them together in one of the best tasting ready-to-drink cold brews I've tried so far.
Califia Mocha is brought to us by the San Joaquin Valley-based Califia Farms. According to their About Us page, here's more on their origin story:
Our name comes from the Spanish legend of Queen Califia who ruled the bountiful, mythical island of California, and is said to have been the inspiration for the name of our home state. With native Californian and beverage visionary Greg Steltenpohl as our leader, we're focused on making the future more mouthwatering by the minute. Like what you hear? Naturally, I was interested in learning more about the founder, Greg Steltenpohl and his story. According to an LA Times article, Greg co-founded Califia in 2010 and grew the company to $100M in annual sales. It also appears Mr. Steltelpohl co-founded beverage maker Odwalla (in 1980, according to Wikipedia), which was eventually sold to Coca-Cola.
How is the packaging and presentation of Califia Mocha Cold Brew coffee?
Call me vain I guess. I like a nice looking bottle of cold brew.
Yes, I know - packaging when it comes to a cold brew coffee review is probably a relatively minor aspect of the review. Things like taste, nutrition and cost are certainly more important.
But as "experiential" as coffee is for me, and for many, the entire experience that a coffee provides is actually part of the experience.
Do I like the Califia branding? How does the Mocha Cold Brew bottle look and feel? Do I get warm fuzzies when I'm browsing their website and researching them as a company?
In short, yes, I really loved the look and feel of the Califia Mocha bottle and I think the branding and company story is quite interesting and compelling.
I like that Califia is responsibly sourcing its coffee, for one thing. I also like that they are based in California. Their specialization in plant-based products makes me feel good about them as well, even as a consumer of meat.
I just get a good vibe from Califia and I would definitely feel good about purchasing their products.
Okay, but does Califia Mocha Cold Brew coffee taste good?
Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes!
Seriously, this stuff tastes awesome. Now, I realize taste is subjective, but I spent quite a few months trying to perfect my own cold brew. I tried different coffee flavor infusions, different creamers and even my own soy and almond milk additions.
I had some pretty good coffee combinations going and was well on my way to perfecting the taste. I felt like my home brewed cold brew was better tasting and better for me than the coffee I was drinking before.
And hot coffee in Florida just never made sense to me anyway.
But then I tried Califia Mocha Cold Brew and it was all over. My home made concoctions just weren't the same any more. I could never make something taste this good on my own. It must be terrible for me, I thought.
But I was wrong...
How does the nutrition information stack up in Califia Mocha Cold Brew coffee?
Yeah, I work out. How'd you guess?
Califia Mocha Cold Brew is actually pretty decent for you, all things considered. It's no protein shake or anything, and by definition I guess the calories it provides are largely "empty".
But you could definitely drink beverages that were worse for you than Califia Mocha, that's for sure.

Does the caffeine in Califia Mocha make you jittery?
From what I've found according to Caffeine Informer, one serving of Califia Farms Mocha Cold Brew contains 50mg of caffeine per 8 oz serving.
That's about 45mg less caffeine than the average cup of regular brewed coffee, so if you're sensitive to caffeine like I am, it's a welcomed stat.
However, if you like high caffeine beverages, Califia Mocha probably won't give you the jolt you're looking for, either.
Just a few final thoughts about Califia Mocha Cold Brew coffee.
Overall, I really (really) like Califia Mocha Cold Brew. I like that it doesn't contain dairy, but instead has almost milk. I like that their coffee is responsibly sourced. The Califia brand gives me a good vibe. I feel like they care about their products and the environment and that's the type of company I like to support.
The price of Califia Mocha is a bit steep (ha). We purchased locally in our supermarket for $4.99 per 48 oz bottle. That's still way cheaper per serving than buying a coffee every morning at some of the other coffee specialty stores out there, but I'd stop short of calling Califia Mocha cheap.
It does seem that you get what you pay for when it comes to Califia and I will gladly continue to purchase this product as long as it's available in my grocery store.
