What comes to mind when you hear, “The Indy500”? A lot races through my mind (no pun intended). A nearly century-long history of racing, some of the fastest cars in the world and one of the largest sporting events in North America.
Well, Dadtography is going to take you to the 99th Indy500 race because we attended and we took A LOT of photos!
This post is actually a culmination of a road trip dedicated to the event. Dadtography drove from our “home base” in Orlando, Florida to Indianapolis, IN. We’ve published a number of posts on this epic road trip.

A Truly Amazing Race
Okay, so I admit it – I’m not really a race fan. I’ve never been to a large-scale race, such as the Indy500. I live just a few miles from the Daytona 500, but I’ve never been. I admit, I think open-wheeled racing is a bit more interesting than stock car racing, but after having gone to the Indy500 for the first time, racing has definitely generated more interest from me, personally.
I think there’s just something about seeing an event like this in person that makes all the difference. I remember going to some of my first Minnesota Twins games at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN. I was probably only 8 years old or so and not particularly interested in baseball. Let’s face it, for a kid, the sport is kinda boring. But seeing a game in person lit something inside me and I think seeing the Indianapolis 500 in person may have done the same for racing as well.
I’d definitely love to go to the 100th running of the Indy500 in 2016 or another IndyCar event. My “dream” racing event would be a Formula 1 race, like Monaco!

Getting a chance to go to an event like the 99th Indy500 is a once in a lifetime opportunity. While racing isn’t for everyone, I do hope that everyone gets a chance to experience once in a lifetime events such as this.
I’ll never forget the “getting there” road trip with my best friend John. He and I have been friends for nearly 20 years but have never road-tripped together before. The journey to the 500 with John and a “guys-only” trip was awesome!
Being at the race, in person, can’t be under-estimated as well. I’ve taken a new interest in watching races on TV since going to the 500, but there’s no comparison to sitting in the stands as the cars came around the corner at over 200mph. The speed, the sounds and the atmosphere were just awesome and I hope I get a chance to experience a great racing event like this again in my lifetime!
