Day two of our Dadtography Road Trip series takes us to downtown Atlanta, Georgia. There’s a lot going on down here, so I’m going to split this into two separate blog posts. Our first stop was in the heart of downtown – Centennial Olympic Park.
Exploring Centennial Olympic Park, Atlanta
Downtown Atlanta is the largest downtown I’ve ever been to. It’s a sprawling set of one-way streets and scattered high-rise buildings. It feels like it covers the same area as most of Manhattan, but it’s way more spread out than NYC. We originally had the thought that we’d start on one end and wander our way around / through downtown.
Needless to say, we didn’t nearly have enough time or will for quite that much walking – especially after being in the car most of the day on the road to Atlanta. Instead of trying to see everything (hopefully we’ll make it back, soon), we decided to focus our attention on the heart of downtown.
Walking Centennial Olympic Park
Our Braves baseball game started at 7:30, so we had a few hours to burn. We arrived downtown just in time to get stuck in another Atlanta mainstay – a traffic jam. There was a concert and a Atlanta Hawks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game going on at the same time downtown. Needless to say, the area was all a bustle.
We found a place to park not too far from Centennial Olympic Park and really just roamed around, taking in all the sights and people. I was impressed by the diverse crowd that gathered to watch the Fountain of Rings show. Kids seemed to flock to the fountain and it boasts a free display not unlike the fountain show at the Bellagio in Las Vegas (albeit on a bit smaller scale). The Fountain of Rings show happens multiple times throughout the day, at 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. 365 days a year.
From couples and teens, to families and those on first dates, there were all types of people in the park. The bustle of downtown with two sporting events and a concert going on simultaneously really made downtown Atlanta “buzz” with excitement.
