Dear Son: Rights of Passage and Your Big Boy Bed

Dear Son,

Along the way, there are certain events that are rights of passage of sorts for us guys: your first relationship, your first county fair, your first baseball or football game, your first kiss…the list goes on. We’ve come to one of those events in your life.

I’ll never forget many of my firsts. While firsts may not be the best, they are the first and that’s what makes them stand out in our minds. I’ll never forget my first girlfriend. Her name was Heather and I was in the third grade.

I remember going to the North Iowa Fair for the first time and causing trouble under the stadium bleachers as a race/demolition derby was going on.

I remember my first baseball game in Minneapolis, watching the Minnesota Twins in the Metrodome with my dad. I still have the Homer Hanky from that game.

Your First Big Boy Bed

You’ve just experienced another right of passage – your first big boy bed. Don’t get me wrong, quality single beds can be quite comfortable. Your twin-sized pillow top was more comfortable than my own bed, in my opinion. But there’s just something to be said for having a full-size bed that allows you to stretch out a bit and have your space.

As a dad, getting you your first full-size bed was a bit of a bitter sweet event. On the one hand, you’re growing up and you’re turning into the man that you will become right before my eyes. On the other hand, you’re no longer the little boy that just graduated from his crib to a single bed. I’m not sure if you remember or not but you needed a stool to get into your bed at first.

You’re growing up and events that are seemingly small can actually be quite significant to parents along the way. Events like a big boy bed serve as reminders for us that time marches on. Before I know it, you’ll be a teenager, and then you’ll be asking me for the car keys for your first (official) date.

Love,

Dad
