Introducing The #Dadtography Road Trip Series – An Epic Dads-Only Road Trip to the #Indy500
Hi all - it's Daniel. I started this website because there's nothing that I love more than being a dad and photography. My friend of 20 years, John, and I decided to take a break for a long Memorial Day weekend in 2015 and make a trek to see the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500.
It's something we had talked about off an on for a while. We realized we had known each other for almost two decades but we had never done a road trip together. Well, we just had to change that.
Road Trip: The Indy 500 on a Budget
John and I planned out a route from our home in Orlando, Florida over 1,000 miles up to Indianapolis, IN. We wanted to make a few stops along the way to visit and stay with friends and relatives. Our goal was to keep costs down as much as possible.
We had buy-in from the wives, but only if we didn't break the bank with our budget. We had to keep the trip well under $1,000, covering all expenses, including the race tickets, gas, meals and souvenirs.
Our Dadtography Road Trip Itinerary
Our road trip would consist of two a total of 5 nights and 4 days. We made two stops along the way from Florida to Indiana: one overnight stop on the way up and one overnight stop on the way back down. We wanted to see as much as we could between Orlando and Indianapolis, so we mapped out a course that would provide for a few sight-seeing stops along the way:
- Day 1: Atlanta, GA - Centennial Olympic Park & Atlanta Braves MLB Game
- Day 2: Chattanooga, TN - Country Breakfast at Maple Street Biscuit Company & Lookout Mountain / Rock City (Georgia, Tennessee)
- Day 3: Indianapolis, IN - 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500
- Day 4: Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, KY
