Single Dad Reflections: Long Weekends Don’t Feel “Long” to Me

As a single dad, getting to spend every moment with my kids is important to me. I was very lucky this weekend, with today being a holiday, I was able to have my kids for an extended time rather than just Friday through Sunday. What a great time we had!

Let’s see if I can recount all the fun things we did. I picked them up after school on Thursday and we drove home, which is about a 35-40 minute commute (I have had to move in with my parents since the divorce). I fixed rice, fish, and broccoli for dinner. To my surprise, my daughter, who usually finishes last or not at all, ate all her food and finished first!

They call weekends like this “long weekends”, but they don’t feel long to me.

The next morning, we must have watched some TV and had sweet rolls for breakfast. A common breakfast for when my kids or my nieces and nephews come over.  After a while, I took the kids to the library where I read books to my daughter, helped my son build a train track, and watched them play games on an iPad. An iPad? Who would have thought that they would have those at a library for kids to play games? When we got home, I let them have some time playing on the Wii. They really like sword fighting and bowling on the Wii Sports Resort game.

Saturday was a great adventure! I took them to a trampoline park nearby and we spent an hour jumping. Let me tell you that I didn’t know I could jump and bring my legs up to my chest. Being 31, you better believe I felt it the next morning. I could barely get out of bed. But I know that the kids really had a good time and that’s all that matters.

On Sunday, I took them to my church and I did something I usually don’t do. I let them sit with me during the service. Afterwards, I took them to lunch at Burger King where they have an indoor play area and they played for an hour or two before their mom came to pick them up.

So overall, the weekend went really well and I am very thankful that I got to spend so much time with them. I look forward to the young man and woman that they become.

On one other note … my son likes to stay up later and do random things. One night, I went to get into bed and he had found my label maker and stuck it in my sheets. Another time, I came upstairs to go to bed and found in him my bed like this …

They call weekends like this “long weekends”, but they don’t feel long to me.
